3D San Secondo – Polvese island (Lake Trasimeno)

The GREAL Laboratory of the European University of Rome has developed a 3D model of the architectural complex consisting of the Church of San Secondo, of medieval origin, and the building of the former Olivetan Monastery, located on Polvese Island, in the heart of Lake Trasimeno. The initiative is part of the laboratory’s research and experimentation activities in the field of geotechnologies applied to historical and geographical heritage.

The church, now in a state of ruin, dates back to the 11th century and stands as an important historical and religious testament of the island. Adjacent to it is the monastery building, now repurposed as a didactic laboratory and environmental center, housing the ARPA Umbria Center for Climate Change and Biodiversity in Lake and Wetland Environments.

The 3D model was created through photogrammetric survey by drone, manually performed with high-resolution image acquisition. In the laboratory, the photos were processed using Agisoft Metashape software, which enabled the generation of a point cloud, mesh reconstruction, and final texturing. The result is a detailed digital reconstruction of the site, here presented in a simplified version optimized for web use.

This 3D modeling project is intended not only as a tool for documentation and research, but also as a resource for scientific dissemination, education, and the promotion of lesser-known historical sites. Reconstructing a place in three dimensions also opens up new perspectives for storytelling, accessibility, and public engagement.
