Our lab creates 3D models using a variety of digital techniques. These include image-based modeling, photogrammetry – from ground or drone-acquired images – and 3D modeling from scratch, meaning the digital creation of objects and structures directly in a 3D environment without photographic surveys or scans.
This section showcases a selection of 3D models produced as part of our research, documentation, and dissemination activities. Each model reflects a process of study and reconstruction, with the aim of exploring, communicating, and preserving elements of geographical and historical heritage.

Documentazione aerofotogrammetica di un mosaico romano presso la Società Geografica Italiana
At the headquarters of the Italian Geographical Society, located in the historic Palazzetto Mattei within Villa Celimontana in Rome, a high-precision scientific documentation activity was carried out on an important Roman-era mosaic preserved in the library halls. The library represents one of the most significant geographical collections in Europe and constitutes a setting of great…

3D San Secondo – Polvese island (Lake Trasimeno)
The GREAL Laboratory of the European University of Rome has developed a 3D model of the architectural complex consisting of the Church of San Secondo, of medieval origin, and the building of the former Olivetan Monastery, located on Polvese Island, in the heart of Lake Trasimeno. The initiative is part of the laboratory’s research and…

3D Polvese Island
The 3D model of the entire Isola Polvese was created through an aerial survey carried out by an automated drone flight, during which over 2,000 nadiral (ground-parallel) photographs were captured. The images were processed in the lab using Agisoft Metashape, resulting in a high-resolution digital reconstruction of the island’s landscape and morphology. This type of…

3D Zannone Island
GREAL has recently completed a digital 3D model of Zannone Island, located in the Ponziano Archipelago north of Ponza Island, and administratively part of the municipality of Ponza (LT), in the Lazio region of Italy. Zannone covers approximately 1 km² (103 hectares) and is completely uninhabited. Since 1979, the island has been part of the…

3D Trebula Mutuesca Amphitheatre (Monteleone Sabino, RI)
In 2022, GREAL created and published a 3D model of the Roman amphitheatre of Trebula Mutuesca, located in the territory of today’s Monteleone Sabino, in the province of Rieti (Italy). The survey was conducted through aerial drone photogrammetry, using a series of flights carried out at different times with various UAV platforms. The strength of…

3D Airship NORGE
This 1:1 scale 3D model of the Norge airship was created as part of the Shadow Of Norge project, aiming to digitally reconstruct the historical dirigible in its original shape and size. The model was developed using 3DStudio Max, a professional tool for 3D modeling and animation. The reconstruction is based primarily on original engineering…
