In the collective imagination, islands and insular societies are often subject to stereotypical interpretations, where summer tourism – centered on sun, sea, and leisure – overshadows all other dimensions. Despite a vast body of literature, this perception remains difficult to remove. The volume aims to offer a collection of essays by various authors and perspectives, highlighting the complexity and multifaceted nature of insular territories. While tourism dynamics certainly shape what Stefano Malatesta has called a “seasonal insular geography,” they cannot be the only lens through which such diverse contexts are understood. Exogenous viewpoints are often limited and do not always fully grasp the endogenous dynamics and the needs of local actors (insiders), whose voices this book seeks to bring forward.
