The Fourth Session of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN 2025) was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from April 28 to May 2, 2025, and was structured around nine thematic meetings. The central theme of the session was:
“Advancing geographical names standardization through inclusive, culturally informed and evidence-based solutions to support sustainable development.”
The session served as a multidisciplinary forum, involving experts in geography, cartography, geospatial information, linguistics, and history. Its aim was to share best practices and recent developments in the management and standardization of geographical names. Particular emphasis was placed on the role of geographical names in preserving cultural heritage and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.

During the session, Prof. Gianluca Casagrande, who participated as Adviser to the Italian delegation, was appointed Chair of the Romano-Hellenic Division, succeeding Prof. Andrea Cantile, Head of the Italian delegation and affiliated with the Italian Military Geographic Institute.
